Awesome!

Another awesome Family Nature Club day!  We visited the Children's Aquarium at Fair Park which included an impromptu visit to the Texas Discovery Butterfly Gardens! All FREE today.

At the aquarium, our kids loved viewing sharks, jellyfish, eels, rays,  clown fish, and many more species from the sea. The child-friendly design offers interactive exhibits for hands-on exploration, with a Coastal touch pool filled with horseshoe crabs, sea stars, sea urchins, anemones, and other creatures.
Outside we were able to touch and feed several varieties of rays.

After lunch we visited Texas Discovery Gardens.
Texas Discovery Gardens
The Gardens feature native plants and plant species from other regions of the world that are adapted to the challenging climate and soils of North Texas. So, YES it was HUMID and hot, perfect conditions for all the flora and fauna.

We were very lucky to see beautiful butterflies up close.

Here's my shot of this beautiful butterfly:

Christmas, Cooler Weather and Nature

As we enter into the season of giving, I thought it would be fun to collect some great nature gift ideas and outdoor activities to do as the temperatures start to cool. In addition to sharing a few blogs you might enjoy and find inspirational, there are also a few good ideas I've found today...

Active Kids Club has an idea for a nature themed Advent Calendar:

And, to get you outside in the cooler months check out this fun craft from Wildlife Garden:

Start a rock collection with your kids

Write us a comment. We would love to read some of your ideas.

Hope to see you on Saturday!

Our 1st Family Nature Club Outing!

We took our first day trip with our Family Nature Club friends to River Legacy Science Center in Arlington.

The center is nestled in the trees between ponds and creeks and trails. It’s architecture was inspired from children’s drawings. It is a special place that feels a bit whimsical. There is no admission. All the attractions there are free.

Inside there are several learning areas.  Each has interactive exhibits geared to grade school age children.  The kids ran around pushing buttons, finding animals and exploring the center.  Everyone had a blast!

Outside is a really pretty observation deck to the pond.  I loved the building architechure here.  We were able to observe some snapping turtles in their natural habitat from a bit of a distance.

River Legacy Park is incredible.  It's huge.  There is a play area, multiple picnic areas - both covered and uncovered, and wide open space.
The kids played on the playground for awhile and then we enjoyed a picnic on a nearby table.

We spent a total of 3 hours and probably could have stayed longer but it was everyones naptime. :o)
Our next Nature Club excursion is scheduled for Saturday, December 4th.  We'll make a post soon with details so you can plan on joining us!
