Our 1st Family Nature Club Outing!

We took our first day trip with our Family Nature Club friends to River Legacy Science Center in Arlington.

The center is nestled in the trees between ponds and creeks and trails. It’s architecture was inspired from children’s drawings. It is a special place that feels a bit whimsical. There is no admission. All the attractions there are free.

Inside there are several learning areas.  Each has interactive exhibits geared to grade school age children.  The kids ran around pushing buttons, finding animals and exploring the center.  Everyone had a blast!

Outside is a really pretty observation deck to the pond.  I loved the building architechure here.  We were able to observe some snapping turtles in their natural habitat from a bit of a distance.

River Legacy Park is incredible.  It's huge.  There is a play area, multiple picnic areas - both covered and uncovered, and wide open space.
The kids played on the playground for awhile and then we enjoyed a picnic on a nearby table.

We spent a total of 3 hours and probably could have stayed longer but it was everyones naptime. :o)
Our next Nature Club excursion is scheduled for Saturday, December 4th.  We'll make a post soon with details so you can plan on joining us!

Our club is not a formal organization, and assumes no responsibility for those who participate in any events.
  • Guardians must stay with their children at all times, and are solely responsible for their well-being.
  • Please be respectful of the Earth, and other people.
  • While we will mostly be keeping to the designated trails, kids will be encouraged to explore their surroundings.  This may mean (with the plant's permission) picking a couple of leaves, etc., or whatever the child needs to do to connect with nature.
  • Attempt to strike a balance between sharing nature experiences with your child, and also leaving them alone to explore on their own.
  • Families are not obligated to stay for the duration of the outing.  Feel free to leave early if you need to.
  • RELAX, AND HAVE FUN!

It's time we get out into NATURE, into GARDENS, and into LIFE!

“What if parents, grandparents, and kids around the country were to band together to create nature clubs for families? What if this new form of social/nature networking were to spread as quickly as book clubs and Neighborhood Watches did in recent decades? We would be well on our way to true cultural change.”
